Amazon Aims to Disrupt Walmart's Delivery Dominance with Project Mercury Expansion
Amazon is expanding its same-day delivery network through Project Mercury, aiming to challenge Walmart's delivery advantage. According to Bank of America analyst Justin Post, the project could expand Amazon's same-day delivery footprint more than tenfold.
The proposed expansion would see Amazon's Sub Same-Day fulfillment network grow to over 1,000 facilities by 2031, from its current 85 locations. These facilities would stock about 90,000 of Amazon's fastest-selling products, including household essentials and medicines.
Amazon estimates a three-year investment of $6.8 billion could generate $7.1 billion in economic value over 10 years. The project is expected to become cash-flow positive by 2030.
