Amazon Among 40 Retailers Slammed Over Prohibited E-Bikes and Scooters

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has sent cease-and-desist letters to 40 major retailers, including Amazon, Wayfair, and Walmart, over the sale of prohibited motorized scooters and e-bikes.

The move comes after a fatal accident involving an e-bike in Lower Manhattan last week. The e-bike in question had a top speed of over 30 miles per hour, exceeding the city's limit of 20-25 mph.

According to Mamdani, some retailers are selling products that exceed the legal speed limits and wattage limits, while others lack proper VINs. If the retailers fail to comply, they could face fines of $2,000 as of August 18.

In response to the letters, Amazon stated that it will 'look into the products in question' and has no issue working with the mayor and City Council to ensure compliance.
