Amazon and Alibaba: Two AI Giants with Different Futures

Two tech giants are building different futures for artificial intelligence (AI): Amazon and Alibaba. On the surface, they seem similar, dominating e-commerce in their respective markets, operating massive cloud computing platforms, and integrating AI into their ecosystems.

However, a closer look reveals that Amazon is taking a more strategic role: powering the broader AI economy through its infrastructure. Its cloud platform, AWS, remains the global leader, providing the necessary computing power, storage, and networking capacity for AI model training and deployment.

AWS's importance in AI is further amplified by Amazon's ecosystem integration. AI improves various business lines simultaneously, including advertising targeting, logistics optimization, product recommendations, warehouse automation, and streaming personalization across Prime Video. This creates a significant advantage for Amazon, as few companies combine cloud infrastructure, commerce, advertising, logistics, and media at such scale.

Alibaba, on the other hand, may be underestimated in its AI ambitions. Its cloud platform is dominant in China, serving businesses across various industries, and has invested heavily in Qwen large language models and AI tools for enterprises and merchants. These AI tools are integrated into Alibaba's ecosystem, spanning e-commerce platforms, logistics, local services, mapping services, and more.

A key difference between the two companies is their valuation. Amazon trades at a premium multiple due to investor confidence in AWS and advertising growth, while Alibaba trades at a discount of 1.9 times its price-to-sales ratio compared to Amazon's 3.4. If Alibaba executes well on AI and investor confidence improves, the upside could be significant.

However, both companies face real risks. Amazon faces rising capital expenditures as it expands its AI infrastructure and data center capacity, while Alibaba navigates regulatory concerns, a slower Chinese economy, and geopolitical tensions that weigh on sentiment.
