Amazon Axes Mechanical Turk Amid AI-Driven Data Services Boom
Amazon is shutting down its Mechanical Turk service after a 21-year run. Introduced in 2005, the platform connected businesses with people completing small online assignments that computers struggled to handle, such as data labeling and transcription.
Mechanical Turk was later incorporated into Amazon Web Services' (AWS) offerings for human review and data annotation, including support for artificial intelligence development. AWS promoted the workforce as a way to obtain human input around the clock.
However, AI capabilities have progressed significantly since its introduction, and competing data-labeling platforms have expanded, making Mechanical Turk redundant. Amazon had already stopped taking new customers last month, indicating a shift in the service's role.
The platform once counted over 500,000 workers, but its closure is unlikely to affect shares materially. Instead, it reflects changes in AWS' AI-focused service portfolio.
