Amazon Beats Q2 Estimates as Cloud Division Powers Growth
Amazon's second quarter earnings call highlighted rapid expansion in its cloud division and disciplined cost management. The company attributed strong results to accelerating growth in AWS, particularly from both AI and core cloud services, as well as improvements in operational efficiency across its global fulfillment network.
CEO Andy Jassy emphasized that AWS saw its fastest growth rate in over four years, while new AI-driven products and custom silicon contributed to rising customer demand. Amazon's benefits also came from ongoing automation, expanded product selection, and robust performance in advertising and grocery businesses.
The company reported a 2% beat on revenue at $200.6 billion, with EPS (GAAP) coming in at $5.75, a 215% beat over estimates of $1.82. Operating margin rose to 13.7%, up from 11.4% in the same quarter last year.
Analysts asked various questions during the call, including about AWS's high margins and whether AI workloads would compress profitability. CFO Brian Olsavsky attributed margin strength to disciplined cost management and capacity optimization, noting that margins will fluctuate but efficiency gains are significant.
