Amazon Bets Big on AI Data Centers Amid Growing Community Backlash
Amazon's commitment to its AI data center strategy has taken center stage this week. The company is investing over $1 billion in local projects around its facilities, focusing on education, job training, energy affordability, and water conservation.
This move aims to address growing community concerns about the environmental impact of Amazon's operations. AWS chief Matt Garman emphasized that data centers are crucial for U.S. economic growth and national security, warning that moratoriums could hinder the country's progress in the global AI race.
Additionally, Amazon is looking to shift $8 billion worth of Nvidia Grace Blackwell chips into a special-purpose vehicle funded by outside investors. This plan would allow Amazon to lease back the hardware while reducing its capital burden.
