Amazon Blocks Muse AI Agent, But Shopify Sees Opportunity
Amazon has blocked Meta's Muse AI agent from accessing its online store, but Shopify is welcoming the technology with open arms.
The dispute centers around whether software agents should be granted permission to navigate digital storefronts and complete transactions on behalf of users. Amazon argues that shopping agents should 'operate openly and respect service provider decisions about whether or not to participate.'
However, Meta had declined Amazon's request to remove the bot, citing a lack of consent. In contrast, Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke sees Muse as an opportunity to simplify the checkout process for users.
'This is an easy and delightful way to shop and check out with Muse,' Lütke said. 'We're excited to offer our merchants this new way to reach customers.'
The move has sent Shopify's stock soaring, with shares closing up 7.3% at $137.92 on Monday, September 21, 2026.
