Amazon Boosts Refunds for Unwitting Prime Subscribers

Amazon Prime customers who were unknowingly enrolled in subscriptions without their consent may be eligible for refunds, thanks to a settlement reached between Amazon and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) last year.

The FTC found that Amazon enrolled millions of users in additional Prime subscriptions without their knowledge or consent and made it difficult for them to cancel. As part of the 2025 settlement, Amazon was required to pay up to $1.5 billion back to affected customers with a maximum payment cap of $51 per customer.

However, this week, a federal court approved an update to the settlement, increasing the maximum payment cap from $51 to $200 per customer and expanding eligibility for refunds to millions more consumers who used between 11 and 20 Prime benefits during a one-year period.
