Amazon Boosts Starting Wages, Adds Grocery Discounts for Employees
Amazon has announced a new wave of employee benefits, including higher starting wages and discounts on groceries. The online retail giant will now pay its full-time, core operations employees at least $20 an hour, up from $19 an hour previously.
This increase brings Amazon's average hourly wage to almost $24 an hour, according to the company. Udit Madan, senior vice president for Amazon's worldwide operations, noted that the company has an annual step plan where pay increases the first three years someone is with them, providing a clear path for how their pay can grow over time.
Amazon employees will also receive discounts on groceries through its online platform and Whole Foods stores. Starting October 1st, they will get 10% off eligible items ordered online through Amazon and 20% off when shopping in-store at Whole Foods, with some exclusions for gift cards and alcohol.
