Amazon Cargo Plane Crashes at Miami Airport
A devastating crash occurred at Miami International Airport on Sunday when an Amazon-branded cargo plane overran the runway, striking a cleaning company's van and a passenger SUV. The five employees in the van were killed, identified as Rolando Aleman, 55, Yoel Rodriguez Naranjo, 53, Julio C Pineda, 75, Carlos Acosta Fajardo, 53, and Javierkys Reyes Quevedo, 47. Five others were injured.
The plane was on its third trip of the day when it crashed, having previously flown from Cincinnati to Miami and then Miami to San Juan, Puerto Rico. The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into the crash, which occurred during a landing attempt.
NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy described the scene as 'devastating' and said that upon landing back in Miami, the plane overran the runway and struck navigational aids and equipment before hitting the cleaning company's van. The plane then careened through a perimeter fence and struck a Toyota SUV.
21 Air, the airline operating the flight, is cooperating with federal investigators and offered condolences to the victims' families.
