Amazon Cargo Plane Crashes in Miami, Killing Five
An Amazon cargo plane overshot the runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday, September 6, killing at least five people and injuring five others in a devastating crash. The Boeing 767 aircraft, operated by 21 Air, was arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico, when it went off the runway around 2 p.m., plowing across a road used by warehouse workers and other businesses surrounding the airport.
The plane struck multiple vehicles before coming to rest beside two semi-trucks, images showed. The aircraft appeared largely intact despite heavy flames and smoke from a complex engine compartment fire. Firefighters used foam from specialized airport firefighting units to extinguish the fire, but crews were still dealing with a fuel leak on the plane hours later.
More than 160 flights were canceled and nearly 325 delayed by late Sunday due to the crash, according to FlightAware. The National Transportation Safety Board is sending a team to Miami led by Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy to investigate.
