Disney Cancels Live-Action Gargoyles Series Amidst Growing Nostalgia for Darker Children's Programming

Disney has abandoned its plans to develop a live-action Gargoyles series for Disney+, according to creator Greg Weisman. The studio had licensed the project to Atomic Monster, but it appears that the initiative has been scrapped without explanation.

The original animated series, which ran from 1994 to 1997, was notable for its dark and complex storytelling, blending elements of Shakespearean drama with noir-inspired visuals and a rich mythology. The show's themes and characters have held up remarkably well over time, and it has maintained an audience score of 84% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Weisman notes that the timing is surprising, given the current trend towards darker and more mature storytelling in children's programming. Recent successes such as Stranger Things and Spider-Noir demonstrate that a unique visual identity can be a major draw for audiences, and Gargoyles has its own distinct characters and settings that could have been adapted effectively.

Disney has a history of reviving classic animated properties with live-action adaptations, but it seems to have passed on the opportunity to bring Gargoyles to life in this way. The studio is currently developing three rival reboot pitches, none of which have received a green light, suggesting that they may be struggling to find the right approach.
