Amazon Clothing Share Doubles as Walmart Loses Ground
Amazon's share of US clothing spending has doubled since 2019 while Walmart's market share has declined, according to data from PYMNTS Intelligence. The analysis estimates that Amazon accounted for 17% of US clothing spending in 2025, up from 8.5% in 2019. In contrast, Walmart's share decreased from 7.3% to 6.2% over the same period.
The data also show that Amazon's estimated clothing revenue rose from $38.7 billion in 2019 to $109.4 billion in 2025, while Walmart's grew from $33.5 billion to $39.1 billion. The gap between the two companies continued to widen in 2026, with Amazon's estimated clothing revenue increasing by 14.7% year over year to $55.5 billion.
Walmart's U.S. CEO David Guggina noted that the retailer was seeing strength in fashion and specific brands such as Scoop and Free Assembly were posting triple-digit comparable-sales growth. However, this growth has not yet translated into clothing-share gains for Walmart, with its estimated share slipping to 6% in 2026.
The PYMNTS numbers also highlight the growing importance of online commerce, with U.S. retail eCommerce sales increasing by 12.2% year over year in Q2 2026. Amazon's dominance in the clothing market is likely a result of its strong online presence and ability to offer fast delivery options.
