Amazon Commits $1 Billion to Alleviate Data Center Concerns
Amazon's cloud computing division has pledged $1 billion over five years to address growing concerns about its massive data center buildout. Matt Garman, chief executive of Amazon Web Services, argued in a lengthy essay that data centers are crucial for the US to keep pace with global developments in artificial intelligence. He compared the construction of data centers to the establishment of the interstate highway system.
Garman acknowledged some concerns about land use, water and power needs, noise, and environmental impact but said many were overblown. To alleviate local opposition, Amazon will pay for its own energy improvements and drop nondisclosure agreements with local governments on data center projects.
The $1 billion commitment will fund workforce training programs, community energy efficiency upgrades, nonprofit grants, and other initiatives. This matches the amount Meta Platforms has committed to spend in communities hosting its data centers.
