Amazon Commits $1 Billion to Communities Hosting Data Centers
Amazon Web Services has announced an investment of over $1 billion in communities hosting its data centers across the United States. The program, called 'Built Together,' aims to enhance the company's existing efforts and engage local officials, nonprofits, and residents in determining priorities for education, job training, energy affordability, water and energy preservation, and other areas.
The initiative has three components: funding community college courses and vocational training in fields like electrical engineering, heating and cooling systems, IT, healthcare, and manufacturing; grants for energy and water efficiency improvements in homes, schools, and public buildings; and projects chosen through consultation with local officials, nonprofits, and residents.
This move comes as $68 billion in data center projects have been delayed or scrapped due to widespread opposition from various sectors. Data Center Watch's lead analyst, Miquel Vila, noted that new groups are emerging, opposition is spreading across states and jurisdictions, and online petition signatures continue to grow.
