Amazon Crackdown Yields Hundreds Arrested and $280M in Illicit Goods

A major crackdown on environmental crime in the Amazon rainforest has resulted in the arrest of hundreds of people and the seizure of millions of dollars' worth of illicit goods.

The operation, called Operation Green Shield 2026, involved over 3,600 officers from five countries - Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru - and targeted activities such as illegal mining, logging, wildlife trafficking, fuel smuggling, and land grabbing.

The authorities arrested 839 people during the operation, which ran from July 15-31, and seized over 280,000 cubic meters of timber, enough to fill roughly 110 Olympic-sized swimming pools. They also recovered 195 metric tons of minerals and equipment used in illegal mining, as well as thousands of live animals and hundreds of dead ones linked to wildlife trafficking.

The operation was coordinated by the International Initiative of Law Enforcement for Climate (I2LEC), a UAE-backed initiative that aims to strengthen international cooperation against environmental crime. The authorities said that the combined value of the goods seized during the operation exceeded $280 million.
