Amazon Delivery Drivers Face Uncertain Future in NYC

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is backing legislation that would require Amazon to directly employ its delivery drivers instead of using subcontractors. The proposed law, known as the Delivery Protection Act, aims to create a licensing system for last-mile warehouses and force companies like Amazon to hire workers performing deliveries directly.

The bill's sponsor, New York City Council Member Tiffany Caban, has stated that the current model allows Amazon to absolve itself of responsibility towards its drivers. 'Amazon is farming out half the work because their employees are treated pretty well,' said Spike O'Neill on KIRO Newsradio. However, Jake Skorheim countered that the subcontractor model provides a legitimate entrepreneurial opportunity for delivery service partners.

Jake also argued that forcing Amazon to bring everything in-house would negatively impact the speed and efficiency of its delivery services. 'Amazon has cracked this code where they can get one-hour delivery to your house,' Jake said. 'Do you think that's going to get better or worse if Amazon is forced to do all of that in-house?'
