Amazon Ditches Data Center NDAs, Commits to $1 Billion Community Investment
Amazon has made significant commitments to transparency and community investment in its data center operations. In a blog post, CEO Matt Garman announced that the company will no longer use nondisclosure agreements (NDAs) with county officials. The move comes as local governments across the country are cracking down on NDAs used by tech companies to keep their data centers' energy and water usage secret.
The company plans to invest $1 billion over five years in communities housing its data centers, focusing on free community college programs, workforce training, and energy efficiency upgrades for schools, homes, and community buildings. Garman acknowledged the fierce backlash against data centers, with over 100 moratoriums being considered across the country.
The controversy surrounding NDAs has been growing, with several states introducing legislation to ban their use in data center projects. At the federal level, a bipartisan group of lawmakers introduced the No Secrets for Data Centers Act in the House.
