Amazon Dominates Chip Market with Trainium and Graviton
Amazon's chip business has grown exponentially in just over a decade, exceeding $25 billion in annual revenue and showing triple-digit growth year-over-year. The company's custom chips, Trainium and Graviton, are purpose-built for specific workloads: Trainium for AI training and inference, and Graviton for general cloud computing.
The approach is vertically integrated, with hardware and software engineers collaborating from chip design to server deployment. This allows Amazon to create silicon tailored for the workloads customers actually run. Trainium delivers up to 40% better price-performance than its predecessor, while Graviton handles general cloud computing with up to 25% better performance.
Amazon's chips are used by major companies like Anthropic and OpenAI, which have committed to using them for AI training and inference. Even smaller companies like Neura Robotics and Odyssey are adopting Trainium due to its efficiency. Over half of all new processing power added to AWS runs on Graviton chips.
The demand reflects a shift in how AI infrastructure gets built, with Amazon positioned across both AI accelerators and CPUs. The company is integrating these technologies so they reinforce each other, aiming for an advantage in model development through its investments in chips.
