Amazon Drone Deliveries Take Flight in Connecticut

Amazon has taken a significant step towards expanding its drone delivery service in Connecticut. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has asked the state to review Amazon's plans, which could lead to packages being delivered by air to residents within 7.5 miles of an existing warehouse in North Haven.

The project, known as Prime Air, would allow customers to receive packages weighing up to five pounds, and is part of Amazon's plan to establish almost 500 Prime Air destinations across the country by the end of this year.

While no other Amazon properties in Connecticut have been reported as potential sites for drone delivery, a wider rollout could see more than half of the state's towns included in the coverage area. This would bring benefits such as same-day or even same-hour delivery to areas including urban centers like Bridgeport, Hartford, and New Haven.

However, Amazon has also highlighted some challenges associated with its drone delivery plans, including tree canopies and overhanging branches that could limit delivery. The company recommends keeping anything taller than five feet at least 10 feet away from delivery points to avoid obstacles.
