Amazon drone delivery project faces uncertainty in North Haven
State legislators in Connecticut are set to meet with Amazon on Monday to discuss the company’s drone delivery project, which has faced significant opposition in North Haven. Earlier this year, Amazon applied to expand its warehouse in the town to support the drone program, but the plan has sparked controversy among local residents and officials.
North Haven’s First Selectman Michael Freda stated that the project has been put on hold, while State House Minority Leader Vincent Candelora clarified that the application has not been paused. Instead, the deadline for public input has been extended to October 15. Candelora emphasized that the process is ongoing and encouraged residents to continue submitting written comments.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) conducted an environmental assessment for the drones and found “no significant impact.” However, state lawmakers have expressed concerns about the drones’ potential disruption to local bird habitats and quality of life. Sen. Christine Cohen (D-Conn.) noted that drones have been recorded flying lower than the permitted height in other areas, while Rep. Dave Yaccarino (R-Conn.) highlighted the region’s rich birdlife and personal connections to the area.
