Amazon Drones Set for Takeoff in Massachusetts
Amazon has announced plans to launch its Prime Air delivery service in Massachusetts this year. The company aims to use drones to deliver packages from its Westborough distribution center, covering a 7.5 mile radius that includes Shrewsbury, Northborough, and parts of Grafton, Worcester, Sutton, and Southborough.
The 80-pound drones measure 5 feet by 5 feet and can fly up to 74 mph. According to Amazon spokesperson Jack Stelzner, the drones will generate a noise comparable to a window fan on low, lasting 30 seconds and typically not heard indoors.
Westborough residents have expressed concerns about privacy and safety, with planning board vice chair John Gelcich citing noise as his biggest concern. Amazon has addressed these concerns by stating that its technology is secure and responsible, with the drones flying automatically along a charted path and having the ability to make adjustments as necessary.
Amazon will hold a community meeting about the proposal on September 23 from 5-6 p.m. at the DoubleTree in Westborough. The company has also stated that there is no live camera feed on the drones, and images captured are stored on encrypted drives.
