Amazon Enters AI Safety Fray
Amazon has weighed in on the artificial intelligence (AI) safety debate in Silicon Valley, saying that AI labs should ensure their models are released only when they are safe and fully tested. In a response to a Reuters inquiry, a spokesperson for the company stated that 'models should be released when they're ready and safe to use, which comes from rigorous testing and strong safeguards.'
This view comes after many of the largest AI labs called for slower development following an outcry among researchers who fear the technology could evade human control and threaten global systems. Amazon develops AI models through its Amazon Web Services subsidiary and in a unit devoted to artificial general intelligence, or AGI.
The company's stance is different from that of some other major players in the industry, including CEOs of Anthropic and OpenAI, who have called for a more measured approach to AI development. However, Amazon has not said whether it plans to take similar measures.
