Amazon Expands Drone Delivery to 500 US Cities, Including Chicago
Amazon is expanding its drone delivery service to nearly 500 US cities, including Chicago and other metropolitan areas. The company's plan aims to provide customers with deliveries in as fast as 30 minutes for lightweight packages weighing up to 5 pounds. Amazon has been testing drone delivery in Arizona, Florida, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Nebraska, Texas, and is now scaling its operation nationwide.
The expansion will make it more convenient for Amazon Prime members, who can receive free drone deliveries for orders over $50. Non-members will pay a flat fee of $2.99 for smaller orders, while non-Prime customers will be charged $4.99. According to retail analyst Sucharita Kodali, the novelty of drone delivery may attract initial interest but its long-term viability is uncertain.
Kodali noted that drones could prove more useful for delivering lightweight items like prescription medications on an urgent basis. Amazon's CEO Andy Jassy has expressed confidence in the technology, stating that Prime Air aims to serve communities with 30 million customers by year-end and deliver half a billion packages by the end of this decade.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has certified Amazon for drone operations, and the company has invested in safety measures to prevent collisions. However, regulatory hurdles remain, including concerns over noise levels and community acceptance.
