Amazon Expands Payouts to Prime Customers in $2.5B Settlement
Amazon has announced that it will expand its payouts to Prime customers who were tricked into enrolling in $139 memberships. The decision comes after a lawsuit with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which alleged that Amazon engaged in deception regarding its Prime enrolment practices.
The FTC claimed that Amazon used confusing enrolment screens to sign people up for Prime without any form of meaningful consent and then made cancellation difficult. As part of the settlement, Amazon will provide an additional payment of $149 to customers who have already received funds, making a total payment of $200.
This process will be automatic, and eligible customers won't need to claim or apply for the funds. The funds should be paid out by April 2027. Amazon had already paid over $845 million to its former customers as part of the settlement.
