Amazon Forms Coalition to Make Sustainable Fashion Affordable for All
Amazon is taking steps to become more sustainable in the fashion industry by launching the Climate Pledge Fashion Coalition, a new program aimed at reducing carbon emissions. The coalition includes over 60 brands, such as Stella McCartney and Brooks Running, that have pooled their demand for low-carbon materials to bring prices down.
The goal of the coalition is to create cost parity between sustainable and non-sustainable materials by aggregating demand and identifying eco-friendly suppliers. Amazon's director of The Climate Pledge, Sally Fouts, said the team chose to focus on fashion because it is a heavy emitter, but existing sustainability coalitions have made little progress.
Fouts also emphasized that lower-priced brands will be able to access these materials once costs fall, making sustainable fashion more affordable for all. However, Amazon's own apparel brands are not leading the charge in switching to less carbon-intensive materials.
