Amazon Hikes AI Chip Rentals Amid Capacity Concerns
Amazon is increasing prices for renting AI chips through its cloud business, Amazon Web Services (AWS). This move comes as management stated in July that AWS would lack data center capacity to meet demand in 2026 and possibly 2027. While the higher prices may reach AWS revenue mainly through new contracts, which are often multi-year agreements, the impact will be relatively small, adding only about $2.5 billion a year to Amazon's revenue.
The price increase is consistent with management's comments in July that new agreements would reflect costs and that spending would pay off. The move also includes Amazon moving Nvidia processors off its balance sheet, providing a funding option beyond debt for AWS' growth. The impact of the price hike will be closely watched in the third-quarter report expected on or around October 29.
