Amazon Hires Microsoft Copilot CTO to Boost AI Agent Strategy
Amazon is making significant strides in the AI agent space, aiming to compete with rivals like Meta's Muse and OpenAI's Dots. The company has hired Pedram Rezaei, former CTO of Microsoft Copilot, to lead its AI agent initiatives. Rezaei will focus on two key products: Quick, an AI assistant and productivity app launched in early 2026 as the successor to Amazon Q Business, and Kiro, an agentic AI-powered IDE designed for structured software engineering.
Both Quick and Kiro have seen substantial growth in user adoption. Quick's monthly AI users increased fourfold from the first to the second quarter, while Kiro's user base doubled over the same period. These products are part of Amazon's broader AI portfolio, which includes the Bedrock model platform and various coding assistants.
The hiring of Rezaei underscores Amazon's commitment to expanding its AI agent offerings. This move comes as the AI industry shifts toward more advanced, autonomous AI systems capable of handling complex tasks. Amazon Web Services (AWS) is at the forefront of this transformation, leveraging its cloud computing capabilities to drive innovation in AI agent technology.
