Amazon Issues Refunds for Certain Tariff Costs Amid Returned Funds
Amazon will issue refunds to customers in 'limited set of circumstances' where it can trace specific tariff costs passed onto them, according to a recent earnings call. The company received $600 million in refunds for now defunct tariffs in Q2 and plans to use the returned funds to benefit consumers.
The e-commerce giant's share of IEEPA tariff refunds, while still sizable, pales in comparison with those of companies such as Nike and Ford Motor Co. Amazon's SVP and CFO Brian Olsavsky explained that the amount the company received 'is limited' due to its efforts to frontload inventory ahead of the implementation of levies.
Olsavsky noted that Amazon often is not the direct importer of goods, given suppliers typically handle imports and pay relevant tariffs. In cases where it did see an increase in cost due to tariffs, Amazon largely absorbed these costs rather than pass them on to customers.
