Amazon Leo Satellite System Grounded by Launch Provider Issues
Amazon's satellite internet system, Amazon Leo, faces significant delays due to issues with its launch providers. Initially, Amazon signed contracts with three major space organizations - United Launch Alliance (ULA), Blue Origin, and Arianespace - to launch its satellites into orbit.
However, both ULA's Vulcan and Blue Origin's New Glenn rockets have been grounded due to anomalies during launches in October 2024 and May 2026 respectively. Additionally, Arianespace has announced a 'turbopump anomaly' on its Ariane 6 rocket, pausing further launches.
As a result, Amazon has been unable to launch satellites at the required pace, with only seven launches completed this year. The company's current deadline is July 2029 to deploy all 3,236 satellites in orbit, but it seems unlikely they will meet this target.
