Amazon Loses Bid to Block Comet Shopping Assistant

A US appeals court has dealt a significant blow to Amazon's efforts to block Perplexity AI's Comet shopping assistant from operating on its platform.

The three-judge panel ruled that Amazon was unlikely to prove that Perplexity had breached federal or California computer access laws, overturning an injunction granted in March 2025.

Amazon sued Perplexity in November 2025, alleging Comet accessed its online store and customers' password-protected accounts without authorization. However, the court found that Amazon users were accessing the retailer's systems, not Perplexity itself.

The ruling also applies to Amazon's claim under California's Comprehensive Computer Data Access and Fraud Act.
