Amazon Outpaces Meta in AI Investing Stakes
Amazon and Meta are two of the largest technology companies investing heavily in artificial intelligence (AI). Amazon's AI strategy spans its full stack, from custom silicon and infrastructure to models and applications. The company's cloud computing platform, AWS, saw revenues grow 37% year over year in the second quarter, reaching a $169 billion annualized run rate.
Amazon's AI investments are also boosting its retail and advertising businesses. Alexa for Shopping active users nearly doubled, while advertising revenues grew 26% in the second quarter. The company is expanding its Ads Agent platform to more countries, reducing costs for advertisers.
META, on the other hand, is pouring capital into AI infrastructure, but its investments are mainly focused on enhancing its core advertising engine. Its AI-powered Advantage+ solutions reached an annual revenue run rate of over $75 billion, and the number of people interacting with Meta AI daily has increased 60% since it was rebuilt around Muse Spark.
Both companies have heavy spending on AI infrastructure, but Amazon holds a clear edge due to its diversified AI revenue streams across cloud, custom chips, advertising, and retail. While META's AI-driven ad gains are notable, rising expenses, legal uncertainties, and a still-developing enterprise business temper its near-term investment appeal.
