Amazon Pledges $1 Billion to Address Data Center Concerns
Amazon has pledged to invest over $1 billion in U.S. communities hosting its data centers as concerns over power, water, and utility costs mount. This move comes as Amazon's cloud unit, AWS, faces scrutiny over the expansion of data centers for artificial intelligence workloads.
The investment will support local priorities such as education, workforce development, energy affordability, and conservation efforts involving water and electricity. This initiative aims to become water positive across its data-center network by 2030, meaning it intends to return more water to local communities than it consumes.
AWS has already invested $276 billion in data centers from 2011 through 2025, with major projects or expansions underway in several states including Indiana, Louisiana, North Carolina, Virginia, and Mississippi. The company claims to have completed 75% of the work toward its goal of becoming water positive.
The move comes as more than 100 proposals for data-center moratoriums are being considered across the U.S., highlighting the growing concern over the environmental impact of data centers.
