Amazon Pledges $1 Billion to Communities Hosting Data Centers Amid AI Expansion
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has pledged $1 billion to communities hosting data centers through its 'Built Together' community program. The investment will fund education and workforce pathways, including free community college and workforce training.
AWS CEO Matt Garman explained that the rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI) requires a significant expansion of digital infrastructure, with data centers serving as the backbone of modern society.
The buildout of data centers is being driven by the increasing demand for AI, which will transform businesses, industries, and customer experiences in ways previously unimaginable. Garman emphasized that unlike traditional transportation infrastructure projects, this expansion is being financed entirely by private industry without taxpayer support.
Garman assured communities that AWS would work transparently with state governments and local nonprofits to address any concerns or issues, promising open houses and regular communication throughout the process.
