Amazon Pledges $1 Billion to Ease Data Center Pushback
Amazon Web Services (AWS) chief Matt Garman has pledged to invest over $1 billion over five years directly into towns hosting new computing hubs. This move aims to ease local concerns and pushback against data center builds due to power and environmental worries.
The pledge comes as part of Amazon's efforts to win over towns fighting local data center builds, with over 100 local towns currently considering rules to pause or block new data centers. The company plans to pour $220 billion into capital projects in 2026, with most of that cash going toward physical data centers.
Garman compared building AI data centers to building the US highway system last century and warned that if local bans stop new data centers, the country risks losing its economic lead in artificial intelligence for years to come.
