Amazon Pledges Long-Term Support for Maryland Nuclear Plant with $3 Billion Deal
Amazon and Constellation Energy have signed a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) to expand and improve Maryland's Calvert Cliffs Clean Energy Center, the state's largest source of clean energy.
The deal will enable over $3 billion in Maryland infrastructure investments, including renovations at the 1,790-megawatt nuclear plant. The PPA will also allow Constellation to develop new clean energy power plants at the site and enhance Maryland's supply of carbon-free energy.
Under the agreement, Amazon will receive 690 MW of power from the nuclear plant, including a 190 MW uprate expected to come online between 2030 and 2032. The tech giant has also entered a separate retail supply agreement with Constellation to support its operations in the PJM market.
Constellation's CEO noted that the investment and revenue certainty from the PPA will allow it to relicense the nuclear plant for another two decades, supporting hundreds of jobs and bringing significant new generation to the regional grid.
