A major renovation is underway at Amazon's Port St. Lucie fulfillment center in Florida, resulting in hundreds of layoffs and transfers to other locations.

The facility closed on September 17, 2026, for a major overhaul that will last until at least 2028. According to Amazon, the work will include advanced robotics and artificial intelligence capabilities, along with an additional 870,000 square feet, requiring a $200 million investment.

When Amazon filed its layoff notice in July, 494 employees were listed as affected. Since then, more than 200 workers have transferred to other Amazon locations. Around 300 employees are expected to take severance as the facility shuts down.

St. Lucie County Commissioner Cathy Townsend noted that the closure highlights the importance of attracting a wider range of businesses to the county. The Economic Development Council of St. Lucie County and local workforce organizations have been hosting job fairs and connecting affected workers with other employers.
