Amazon Pours $200B into AI Ambitions Amid Community Backlash
Amazon is doubling down on its AI data center strategy in the face of growing community backlash. The company has pledged over $1 billion for local investments near its facilities, aiming to build trust and counter concerns over power use and water consumption. AWS chief Matt Garman framed data centers as crucial to U.S. economic growth and national security, warning that moratoriums could put the country behind in the global AI race.
At the same time, Amazon is exploring a financing plan for its advanced Nvidia Grace Blackwell chips, reportedly looking to move $8 billion of the hardware into a special-purpose vehicle funded by outside investors. This would allow Amazon to lease back the hardware while easing its capital burden on its balance sheet.
The company's capex has surged in recent quarters, with $44.2 billion spent in Q1 2026 and a projected $200 billion for the year largely tied to AWS expansion. Management has cautioned that this investment wave will pressure free cash flow until new data centers begin to generate returns, making capital efficiency a growing focus for investors.
