Amazon Prime Air Plane Crashes at Miami Airport
The Boeing plane that crashed at Miami International Airport on Sunday made its debut for Amazon just over a decade ago during a Seattle Seafair air show. In 2016, the company unveiled the Boeing 767 widebody jet freighter with the registration number N1997A as part of its Prime Air fleet.
The plane was registered as N1997A because 1997 is the year Amazon went public and is a prime number, officials said at the time. This was one of 11 jet freighters that joined Amazon's fleet in rapid expansion of its air cargo capacity.
On Sunday, the plane overran a runway after arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico, striking multiple vehicles before coming to rest. At least five people were killed and five others injured in the crash.
The cause of the crash has not been determined, but thunderstorms and wind gusts up to 30 mph were recorded in the area at the time.
