Amazon Puts $50 Billion on the Line with Record-Breaking OpenAI Bet
Amazon has completed its massive $50 billion investment in OpenAI, as revealed by the company's latest regulatory filing. This enormous investment was made in three stages, with Amazon paying $15 billion during the first quarter of 2026, $13.7 billion during the second quarter, and the remaining $21.3 billion after June 30th.
The investment brings Amazon and OpenAI closer together across various areas, including cloud computing, AI chips, enterprise software, and consumer products. The two companies have a strategic partnership that includes using AWS infrastructure, with OpenAI committing to use two gigawatts of computing capacity powered by Amazon's Trainium AI chips.
This deal is not just an equity investment; it's also a commercial relationship designed to push more OpenAI workloads onto AWS. As part of the agreement, AWS will serve as the exclusive third-party cloud distribution provider for OpenAI Frontier, which helps companies build and manage teams of AI agents working across business systems.
The partnership has expanded by another $100 billion over eight years, with parts of the agreement dependent on the performance and delivery of AWS chips and infrastructure. This deal creates opportunities for Amazon to make money from the same relationship, including earning cloud revenue from OpenAI's computing needs and using OpenAI technology inside Amazon products.
