Oracle Stock Struggles Amid AI Concerns and Balance Sheet Pressure
Oracle's stock has continued to underperform its peers, including Amazon, Microsoft, and Alphabet, due in part to concerns over the company's heavy reliance on OpenAI and the resulting strain on its balance sheet.
The company's stock price declined by 11.4% in July, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence data, which can't be viewed in isolation as it occurred during a broader sell-off of AI-related stocks.
However, Oracle has recently secured a major Pentagon contract and expanded its partnership with Alphabet's Google, incorporating Google's Gemini AI models into its suite of enterprise applications. These developments have helped strengthen the case for the stock, but the company still faces concerns over its ability to meet financial obligations related to its deal with OpenAI.
According to S&P Global Ratings credit agency, OpenAI could make up about half of Oracle's $638 billion in remaining performance obligations (RPO), which has contributed to skepticism from investors and a downgrade of Oracle's debt to BBB- (one notch above junk).
