Amazon Returns Tariff Refunds, But Only to Some Customers
Amazon has recovered around $600 million in tariff refunds but is not automatically giving it back to all customers. The company says it will proactively refund certain shoppers when it can trace a specific import charge that was passed on to them.
The money stems from tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, which led to a federal refund process for eligible duties after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against the president's authority in February 2026.
Chief Financial Officer Brian Olsavsky explained that Amazon had stocked inventory ahead of the tariffs and was not the importer of record for most products sold through its marketplace, which makes it difficult to establish a one-to-one connection between a particular tariff payment and a shopper’s purchase.
