Amazon Seeks Smaller Tax Break Deal for Orange County Warehouse
Amazon is seeking a smaller tax break deal to build a $607 million warehouse in Orange County, New York. The company's latest proposal for a payment-in-lieu-of-taxes agreement (PILOT) would give Amazon $70 million in property tax breaks and allow it to begin paying its full tax bill after 10 years instead of 20.
The project is expected to create 750 permanent jobs, according to the application. Amazon has agreed to hire unionized workers during construction. The company's previous PILOT request was vetoed by state-appointed monitor Brian Sanvidge due to concerns about the structure of the tax breaks.
Under the new proposal, Amazon would receive a 90% property tax exemption for the first seven years, decreasing to 80% in the eighth year and 70% in the ninth and 10th years. Sanvidge has expressed continued concerns about the deal but is optimistic that an agreement can be reached.
