Amazon Stock Tumbles as Anthropic Commits $11.6 Billion to Rival Cloud Provider
Amazon's stock price dipped to $248.515 on September 25 as investors reacted to news that Anthropic had committed $11.6 billion to cloud infrastructure provider Akamai over seven years.
The deal, which includes a warrant potentially giving Anthropic a 5% stake in Akamai, also has the potential for an additional $9 billion in business, further expanding the relationship between the two companies.
Amazon's cloud computing division, Amazon Web Services (AWS), may benefit from this arrangement, but it is unclear whether existing workloads are shifting away from AWS to Akamai.
Anthropic's investments have already yielded $53.4 billion in non-operating pretax other income for Amazon in its second-quarter earnings release, primarily through gains on its Anthropic investments.
