Amazon Sued Over Alleged Seafood 'Greenwashing' Claims
A proposed class action lawsuit has been filed against Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) in Seattle federal court, alleging that the company's seafood sustainability claims are misleading consumers.
The plaintiffs claim that labels such as 'dolphin safe,' 'responsibly sourced,' and 'MSC Certified Sustainable Seafood' lack adequate support, and that most fishing vessels are not publicly tracked or transparent about their operations.
The lawsuit targets several major seafood brands, including Bumble Bee, Chicken of the Sea, StarKist, and Amazon's own 365 by Whole Foods Market.
The plaintiffs said they would have paid less for the products or not bought them at all had they known about the alleged sourcing practices.
