Amazon Surges Ahead of Microsoft in AI Market
Amazon and Microsoft are two of the biggest players in cloud computing, but when it comes to artificial intelligence (AI), which one offers the better opportunity? Both companies have integrated AI across their product suites while partnering with external model providers, but Amazon appears to be gaining momentum.
The growth trajectory of both companies is a key factor in this decision. Historically, Microsoft has posted faster revenue expansion than Amazon, but that dynamic flipped in the most recent quarter. Amazon Web Services (AWS) accelerated to 37% growth pace after years of hovering around the 20% range.
Operating profit growth also tells a similar story. Both companies hold significant stakes in private AI startups, but when stripping out those effects, Amazon's operating income growth has opened up a clear lead, driven by the higher-margin profile of cloud computing relative to its retail operations.
Valuation is where things get nuanced. On a trailing operating profit basis, Microsoft trades at a meaningfully lower multiple than Amazon. However, this discount is justified by Amazon's superior growth rate. When looking at forward earnings projections, which filter out past investment gains, Amazon actually looks cheaper on a forward price-to-earnings basis.
