Amazon Unveils Tetromino Plan to Automate Delivery Stations with AI and Robotics
Amazon is working on a new project called Project Tetromino to automate delivery stations. The effort, first reported by Business Insider, aims to build fully automated facilities using advanced AI and robotics. This move targets one of the last manual steps in Amazon's delivery chain: sorting and loading packages into vans before they reach customers.
The plan involves using technology from Boxbot, a robotics startup whose system moves packages from conveyors to trays and uses AI to place them in the right order for delivery. The name 'Tetromino' comes from the game Tetris, as the system must quickly figure out how to stack and pack random boxes inside vans efficiently.
Amazon expects the automated setup to work about 2.5 times faster than today's manual stations. A leaked roadmap shows a $103 million pilot planned for 2028 and more than $530 million in funding by 2029. However, Amazon said that Tetromino is an 'early-stage concept' and that the leaked financial roadmaps are inaccurate and might change.
