Amazon Vows to Improve Data Center Transparency Amid Growing Opposition
Amazon's chief sustainability officer, Kara Hurst, has acknowledged that the company needs to improve its communication about the environmental impact of its data centers. This comes amid growing opposition to data center projects in the US and Europe.
Hurst stated that Amazon is revising its practices and calling for more transparency and accountability in its operations. The company is also looking to publish more metrics tracking its environmental footprint, such as energy and water usage at its sites.
Amazon's carbon footprint grew for the second year in a row in 2025, with the company investing $220 billion in capital expenditure in 2026 alone. Local opposition has hindered data center projects worth some $68 billion between April and June this year, according to Data Center Watch.
