Amazon vs Meta: The Battle for E-Commerce's Checkout
Meta's AI agent Muse has sparked a battle over who owns the checkout in e-commerce. The agent can browse, compare and buy products for users, but Amazon blocked it from its retail site after Meta declined to remove it. This move reflects Amazon's concerns about security and consent.
Amazon generated over $68 billion in advertising revenue last year through a business that depends on people scrolling through pages and seeing sponsored products. An AI agent like Muse would bypass these listings, cutting into this revenue stream.
The standoff highlights the bigger question of how retailers will handle AI agents, which are increasingly being used to facilitate purchases. Some, like Shopify, have partnered with Meta to let agents check out on their stores using Shop Pay. Others, like Amazon, are blocking them.
Shopify's decision makes sense given its focus on payments, while Amazon is trying to protect its ad business. The battle over AI agents also raises questions about security and consent, as well as who will be responsible for purchases made by these agents.
