Amazon vs Nebius: Cloud Computing Giants with Different Strategies
Amazon and Nebius Group are both key players in the cloud computing sector, but they cater to different needs and operate under distinct strategies. Amazon, the largest cloud provider through its Amazon Web Services (AWS), is investing heavily in data centers, with a $220 billion expenditure this year. This massive investment is set to boost its computing capacity, customer base, and long-term growth. Amazon's advantage lies in its vast commerce business, which funds its data center expansion without excessive debt.
Nebius Group, on the other hand, specializes in neocloud computing, a fast-growing segment designed specifically for AI workloads. Despite its smaller size, Nebius is growing rapidly, reporting a 454% year-over-year revenue increase in Q2. However, this growth comes at a cost, as Nebius has taken on significant debt to compete. The company's payback period for deals closed in Q2 was just under two years, making the debt strategy currently viable.
The two companies present different investment opportunities. Amazon offers strong growth with lower risk, while Nebius provides higher upside potential but comes with greater risk. Nebius must grow quickly to establish itself as a standalone business, given the AI boom expected to last through 2030. Amazon, with its robust revenue streams, has a more secure long-term outlook.
For investors, a balanced approach might be ideal. Allocating 25% of a cloud computing investment portfolio to Nebius and 75% to Amazon could offer a mix of high-growth potential and stability, ensuring strong returns even if Nebius does not meet expectations.
